This blog focuses on stories of “bad starts with happy endings” from people who were permanent or “Crown” wards of the state.
In Canada, juvenile wards of the state are “temporary” or “crown” wards. You are a temporary ward if there is a chance you can be reunited with your family. You can be a temporary ward several times, or once for several years. If you are a “Crown Ward”, contact with your family has probably been severed, forever, or at least until you reach the age of majority.
In Ontario, the Children’s Aid Society (CAS aka “the agency”) acts as the actual guardian of temporary or crown wards. There are 52 agencies spread across the province, each run by a board of trustees drawn from the local community and funded by the province.
